The Oxford Picture Dictionary Interactive

Beginning ESL (Level 0)
Curriculum Links –
Students in this
course will begin to learn the basic structures of the English language.
Instruction will include vocabulary expansion, grammar instruction,
reading, listening, speaking, and writing. This lesson will follow
grammar instruction on using the past tense.
Objectives –
At the end of this
lesson, students will be able to:

Use The Oxford Picture Dictionary Interactive to learn
and practice new vocabulary;

Identify new vocabulary when heard by writing it down;

Identify new vocabulary by matching heard items to pictures;

Identify new vocabulary by matching read items to pictures;

Write a paragraph using new vocabulary;

Ask questions orally about a classmate’s trip to the mall;

Answer questions orally about a trip to the mall.

Materials and Timing –
Two 45 minute periods (combined or
over two days). The first 45 minutes should be in a computer lab with The
Oxford Picture Dictionary Interactive installed. The second 45 minutes can
be in the computer lab or classroom with at least one laptop with OPDI
installed.
Scope and Sequence –
Day 1:
-
Students sign in to the Oxford
Picture Dictionary Interactive, giving their names to record in the
database. (This may be already done if this is not the first use of OPDI
in this class.)

Students are instructed orally to
browse to Unit 7, Community, and to click on the topic the Mall.
Teacher assists students in finding the unit where necessary.

Students spend 15 minutes
exploring the vocabulary in the topic.

Students spend an additional 15
minutes completing the practice activities for the topic.
-
Students spend the final 15
minutes (or less) using OPDI to compose a paragraph about a weekend
trip to the mall.
-
At the end of the period,
students print their compositions and are assigned their completion for
homework.
Day 2:
-
Students come to class with their
handwritten paragraphs ready.
-
Students are instructed to revise
their work, referring to the OPDI when necessary. (10 minutes)
-
Students take turns presenting
their paragraphs orally to the class, answering the class’ questions. (15
minutes)

Students take a short quiz on the
vocabulary in the unit. (20 minutes)

Evaluation of the Lesson –
This lesson will be evaluated for its effectiveness through analysis of the
tracking information recorded in OPDI, through class performance on the
post-test, and through feedback from the students about their experience using
the software.
